When we brought Ryuki back to the restaurant with us, Fay, Saph and I went on duty while Rei took Ryuki back to her office where she had some things to discuss with him. He was a lawyer, and generally helped us out with legal issues. He also helped us cover up murders. He had always pointed out that we can only escape the police for so long.

I realized that too. Sure, we could live normal lives and have normal jobs. But eventually, one of us would slip up and make a mistake.

You see, our way of killing was different. We’d get close to the victim first. Years of doing this has, for the most part, taken away our emotions. After getting close to said victim, we kill them. Nice and clean, they weren’t missed.

It was hard to say why we could live with ourselves after doing this so many times. And the answer? We couldn’t. Outside, we all appeared to be calm, cool, collected. But inside…. Inside we were boiling to the breaking point with guilt.

At least, the others were. It had been a long time since I had felt real “guilt”. A lot of people hate me for it, and you probably do too. But that’s all the way it is. A lot of things happened to me in my teens that probably had to do with why I’m this way.

But alas, that’s a story for another time.

I absentmindedly glanced over at Yayuki, who was sitting at one of the tables, juggling silverware. She’d probably disappear in a couple minutes when her pager goes off because she has another case at the hospital she worked at.

Such was the monotony of being on-duty at this restaurant….

“Mei. Mei. Please get your head out of the clouds! Look, you’ve got a customer,” Sapphire’s voice said as fingers snapped in front of my face.

“Hm? Oh, right,” I sighed. Heaving myself out of my chair at the bar, I went to meet my customer, who had sat down at a table at the far end of the restaurant. There was little business today, as there was everyday.

“Good morning, sir,” I said half-heartedly, shifting my weight to one foot and looking at the ceiling. “I’m Mei and I’ll be your waitress today. Can I get you anything to drink?”

“Just a beer—hey, don’t I know you from somewhere?” he said, looking up at me.

I glanced over him. His black hair was streaked with dull blue, and he had dark, piercing eyes. “Probably not,” I told him. “I usually make a point to avoid familiarity.”

“No, I’m pretty sure I know you. Oh, that’s right! You’re that girl I dated a couple years ago!” He smiled.

I narrowed my eyes. “Motaharu?”

His shoulders fell. “Ah, Mei, just as sarcastic as ever, I see. Alas, you remain ever cold.”

“Shut up,” I said, fighting he urge to stab him with the fork on the table. “What do you want?”

“A lot of things, honey. A lot of things,” he said, sighing. “For starters, how about that beer?”

I rolled my eyes and headed back towards the bar. “One beer,” I told Sapphire, who was cleaning a glass.

“What’re you so angry about?” she asked me, looking over my face as she got the requested drink.

Indeed, my teeth were clenched and fist twitching slightly. “It’s…him,” I managed.

She smiled as she glanced over at the man at the table. “Why’d you leave him again?” she asked me, sliding the beer over.

I narrowed my eyes and glared dangerously at her.

She laughed. “Just go serve him. Talk. See what he wants. You’re good at getting out of bad situations. You’ll be fine,” she assured.

When I set the glass down on the table, I did it with more force intended, causing some beer to splash over the sides.

“Have a seat. I want to talk,” he said, motioned to a chair. I pulled another over, and turned it backwards, and sat down, my legs on either side of the back of the chair. I put my arms on the top and put my chin on my arms.

“What?” I asked.

He took a sip of the beer and set it aside. “Mei, look,” he said, turning to me and lowering his voice. “Two years ago—what happened was an accident.”

I opened my mouth to say something, but he covered it.

“Yeah, ‘how can you call that an accident’, right?” he asked.

I nodded, and he removed his hand from my mouth.

“I didn’t mean to put you in that situation,” he explained, his hand resting on mine. “I just—I was reckless.”

I laughed. “Tell me about it! Please, you were more reckless than I would have been in that situation!”

“Mei, sh!” he said, glancing around. “I’m…ah, avoiding someone.”

I looked around as well.

“Who?”

“My…uh…my girlfriend,” he trailed off.

My eyes widened. “You’re telling me,” I said, my voice shaking, “that you came here, looking for me, to apologize—with a girlfriend?”

“Yes, but—I’m avoiding her!” he explained hurriedly. “She’s supposed to…um, frequent here, but I knew that you were here, so I had to come and—”

“Forget it,” I said, standing up. “Just forget it. Avoid here. That’s all fine and good. Now I’ve got a job to get to,” I told him, putting the chair back.

“Mei, it’s not—I didn’t—why are you—?”

I stopped him, covering his mouth, albeit a bit more roughly than he had covered mine. “Look,” I told him in a low, threatening tone, “I’m in a tight spot. We’ve got a job to do, and I can’t distract myself with you. I dumped you because that’s what was happening. You’re just a distraction for me.”

“Distractions are always good,” he said when I removed my hand. He was smiling.

“Sometimes,” I agreed, turning away. “But not now.”

“Saturday at eight, okay? I’ll pick you up at your place,” I heard him say as he went to leave. “You look like you could use a good ‘distraction’. Oh, and keep the change.”

I caught the bills he flicked at me as I went back to the bar.

“He seems into you all over again,” Sapphire said as I tucked the money away.

“You’ll stop talking if you know what’s good for you,” I muttered, laying my head on the bar. “May I please have a drink?”

“Nope. Sorry, hon, you’re on the job. Can’t risk you getting drunk.”

I groaned. “He can just be so infuriating sometimes…I wish he never existed.”

Sapphire laughed. “I would say ‘be careful what you wish for’, but I’ll let it be for now. You’ve got another customer.”
